Catastrophic earthquake strikes Northwest Syria: Give now to support communities during emergencies

by Mercy Corps

On February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Northwest Syria, including Idlib, where Mercy Corps currently works. Our colleagues in Northwest Syria report that the situation is catastrophic, with the area affected by the earthquake being the center for over 1.8 million displaced Syrians who were already suffering after a decade of conflict.

Mercy Corps is responding to the most urgent needs of impacted communities, with an immediate focus on delivering critical water, sanitation and hygiene services as well as distributing shelter supplies and other essential items.

Mercy Corps is focusing our efforts in Northwest Syria, where we have a team of over 45 team members on the ground who have deep insights into the local context and strong local partnerships. We also know that compared to Turkey or Turkish-controlled areas in Syria, the local authorities in communities in Idlib have limited resources and are unprepared for the scale of natural disaster management that this earthquake requires. Syrian communities are relying on organizations like Mercy Corps and our partners.

Mercy Corps helps communities in Syria and around the world as they prepare for, protect against, and recover from conflict and crisis. Your gift today will support families in 40+ countries where we work as they build toward a bolder, brighter future. Please give today.
