Famine in Sudan: Give now to support communities facing starvation

by Mercy Corps

After years of crisis, a full-scale civil war erupted on 15 April 2023 when fierce fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out in the capital Khartoum.

The war has devastated Sudan, killing over 14,000 people and wounding thousands more, while pushing the population to the brink of famine with more than half the population suffering acute food insecurity.

Sudan is now the world's largest internal displacement crisis, with over 10 million internally displaced people, including the biggest child displacement crisis.

Since the conflict began in April 2023, more than 10 million people have been displaced within Sudan, with another 2 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Sudan are now experiencing famine conditions, millions are displaced from their lands, living under regular bombardments and cut off from humanitarian assistance. Extreme hunger is unfolding, and the outlook for food production in 2024 is uncertain. Sudan is facing a devastating hunger catastrophe on a scale not seen since the Darfur crisis in the early 2000s.

Despite numerous calls for a ceasefire by regional and international stakeholders, fighting has continued unabated and has intensified in recent months.

Mercy Corps helps communities in Sudan and around the world as they prepare for, protect against, and recover from conflict and crisis. Your gift today will support families in 40+ countries where we work as they build toward a bolder, brighter future. Please give today.
