Within weeks of detection, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern was declared and hundreds of suspected cases and deaths have been reported, reflecting its severity and growing risk of international spread. Response efforts are especially critical as this strain of Ebola currently has no approved treatments or vaccines, meaning the response must rely almost entirely on prevention.
