Pump repair project in Bikoro, Equateur Province, Democratic Republic of Congo

by Appropriate Technologies for Congo

The territory of Bikoro has benefited from some drinking water supply projects from different organizations not on the whole territory. Some villages have been provided with autonomous drinking water supply systems by different stakeholders. Despite the efforts made by all the actors, the maintenance system is still inefficient, with very long breakdowns, repeated breakdowns over a short period of time, the lack of expertise in certain brands of pumps by the maintainers, and the absence of financial resources to cover the cost of repairs, etc. Faced with this constant, most of the pumps built by the various NGOs have broken down and at the local level there are no technicians to ensure the maintenance of these pumps so that the population has a lot of difficulty in obtaining drinking water, women and children travel long distances to fetch water from unprotected sources. The consumption of non-potable water is at the origin of the mortality of children under 5 years old and the multiple outbreaks of epidemics (cholera and Ebola) in Bikoro.

The construction and rehabilitation of wells and boreholes is a more sustainable solution, as is the creation of water networks, considered when a large number of people need to be served.

Technologies Appropriées for Congo, has set itself the goal of repairing 50 pumps in the villages of Bikoro and in schools and health clinics to give the population access to drinking water near their homes. We will also organize training for local technicians to ensure the maintenance of these pumps in a sustainable manner for their communities in the days to come.

Simple solutions like this make a difference. They save lives.
