On August 26, 2026, massive flooding swept through north-central Nepal near the Tibetan border. According to official reports, more than 150 people have died and over 400 are missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists.
A landslide reportedly triggered flooding of the Bhotekoshi River, causing widespread damage to villages, roads and hydropower projects. Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts in Bagmati province were among the worst affected. The floods have left families facing devastating loss, displacement and uncertainty.
UNICEF has been working in Nepal since 1964, advocating for children's rights and helping to strengthen the systems and services. UNICEF staff on the ground are already coordinating a response with the local government, focusing on health, food, and shelter as areas of immediate priority.
