In just 24-hours, Hurricane Melissa strengthened from a tropical storm to a powerful Category 4 hurricane, and is looking to become the first Category 5 hurricane to ever make landfall in Jamaica. Melissa is expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and heavy rainfall across Jamaica and neighboring islands. Catastrophic winds could cause extensive power outages and destroy buildings, including homes.
“With a slow-moving storm like Melissa we are concerned about severe flooding that causes major damage and potentially isolates communities, cutting off access to care,” said Americares Director of Emergency Response Mariel Fonteyn.

We are reaching out to partner organizations in the path of the storm to offer assistance in anticipation of needs. Americares Emergency Response team plans to deploy to the region as soon as able. While we don’t yet know how severe the damage will be, our teams stand ready to deliver critical medicines and relief supplies, as well as emergency funding to ensure health services are available in the wake of the storm.
