Emergency Response for Central and Southern US Tornadoes

This past weekend, more than 30 tornadoes touched down across six US states - Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee, leaving a path of destruction in their wake.  Xylem teams are working with our partners in the region to respond.

Situation Update:

• In Mayfield, Kentucky, a tornado leveled most of the town, destroying homes, municipal buildings and businesses, including a factory with more than 100 workers inside. Search and rescue operations are ongoing across the states that were affected by what is being called the deadliest outbreak of tornadoes in Kentucky’s history. Governor Andy Beshear stated in a press conference today that several towns in western Kentucky aren’t standing.
• Approximately 75,000 households across Tennessee and Kentucky are without power as crews begin the work of repairing the parts of the electric system that are still standing.
• Shelters are opening in Tennessee and Kentucky and people are also sheltering with family and friends.
• Boil water advisories have been put in place and water towers and water treatment facilities are reporting damage.

Response:

• Americares is in contact with their more than 100 partner health facilities in Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee to offer assistance— which are mostly safety net clinics serving low-income, uninsured and underinsured families.  They have an assessment team deployed to survey the damage and are moving forward to provide hygeine kits for displaced families, essential medecines, and PPE for health workers and survivors.
